Jane Austen was a successful author in the 1800s in spite of the many obstacles set by publishing companies at the time. Because married women didn’t traditionally have a career, Austen’s name never appeared on her own books during her lifetime. Her first published novel was billed “By a Lady”. After its success, all following books were credited as “By the author of Sense and Sensibility“.
